Cohoes Falls in Autumn

October 14, 2013  •  64 Comments

A visit to the Cohoes waterfall in Cohoes, NY on a beautiful Saturday in mid-October is a great opportunity to try the new Fuji X100s. The autumn colors were not yet at peak, but nonetheless the blue skies and Fall colors made for some nice viewing. Above is a panorama taken from a lower platform straight from the Fuji X100s. Overall, I am impressed with this camera!

Above is a photo of the Cohoes Waterfall taken from a lower observation deck. Slight post-processing of the RAW image in Adobe Lightroom 5 was used here. Mostly use of a gradient filter for the sky and slight tweaks to color. I've found small adjustments to the Camera Calibration RGB and Shadow is required to really get the RAW images to pop.

An HDR image of the Cohoes Waterfall from an upper observation deck. I used three exposures to make the HDR image in Nik's HDR Efex Pro 2. No processing of the RAW files in Adobe Lightroom prior to HDR conversion.

This is a good example of the Camera Effects calibration. The RAW image was flat and dull. Small color adjustments to the RGB really worked wonders here.

The above image is of the pedestrian access bridge to the observation decks and trail. Converted to Black & White in Adobe Lightroom 5.

Ornamental grass along the trail to one of the upper observation decks. I used the ND filter on the Fuji X100s to take this photo given the bright sunlight.

This was the first time I brought the Fuji X100s out with the purpose of taking photos. Overall, I'm impressed. The out-of-camera JPEGs are quite nice, but so far I prefer the RAW and minor adjustments in Adobe Lightroom.

Monarch Butterflies

September 15, 2012  •  Leave a Comment

Our butterfly bush has the tendency to explode in August. This year has been no exception. One weekend I noticed that the bush was covered in Monarch butterflies, so I retrieved my camera and started shooting.

All the images here are captured with a Canon 40D and a Canon ef135mmf/2L lens. All photos are processed with Nik Software's Color Efex Pro 4 by applying contrast adjustments and a Fuji Velvia 100 filter unless otherwise noted.

The Fuji Velvia 100 filter made for vibrant purples and oranges...maybe a little too vibrant. Here you see a Monarch upside down on the flower.

In this image a Monarch is captured as it begins to fly.

Trying to capture a Monarch with its wings spread and get an interesting background proved quite difficult on this day. This image was about as close as I came to achieving my goal.

These photos were taken in the later afternoon and this Monarch was located in just the right position to be illuminated by the fading sun behind. The light from the sun lends a nice color to the orange and yellows on the wing.

I love the ef135mmf/2L lens...this image below is why.

This image is processed using Nik Software's Pro HDR and 3 exposures. I like the way the leaves in the background faded out. The HDR effect here is subtle.

Here I have applied a Kodak Portra 400 filter. You can see the purples are more life like as compared to the Velvia filter.

Thanks for stopping by!

May Iris

June 23, 2012  •  Leave a Comment

I found time on a couple different occasions in May to walk around the house and take a few photos of the Spring iris in bloom. All photos were shot with a Canon 40D and a Canon EF135MMF/2L lens. When you nail the focus, the images this lens can take are amazing.

The images are processed in Aperture via Nik Software (Sharpen Pro, Define, Viveza, Color Pro, and Silver Efex Pro for the black and white transfers).

First is an Iris (yellow I believe) from early May in black and white. I was trying to expose the foreground flower while blurring the background flowers.

Later in the month, I captured this blue iris in full bloom.

The same flower in black and white from a slightly different angle.

Another blue iris in color

and in black and white.

Here is a yellow iris from our front yard.

and again in black and white where you can see more detail of the flower.

And here is an iris that was white with orange (not sure what the official name is). The image looked dirty in color, but the detail is revealed in black and white.

Central Rail Road of New Jersey Terminal

While chaperoning a field trip to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, I found some time to photograph the historic CRRNJ terminal while waiting for our ferry to depart.

All photos are shot with a Canon 40D and EF 50MM f/1.4 USM lens. The RAW images were imported into Aperture and edited with Nik Software (Sharpen Pro, Define, Color Efex Pro, Silver Efex Pro and/or HDR Efex Pro).

This is the entrance to the terminal. I think this building photographs well in black and white.

An overhead shot of the signage directing passengers to the train platforms.

One of the platform signs. You can see how overgrown the platforms now are in the  background.

Another image of the overgrown platforms. This is an HDR image of a single shot where I created multiple exposures from the RAW file.

Here is another HDR image in color of one of the archways showing NYC in the background.

Looking out into the Hudson River, you can see the Verrazano-Narrows bridge to the south.

Another sign for the train platform in color.

Once aboard the ferry, I took the following image departing at about mid-day. This is an HDR image, again made from a single image with multiple exposures from the RAW file.

Upon returning from the Statue of Liberty in the late afternoon, I took the following image. The light was not very favorable as can be seen in the reflections off the water in the foreground.

Thanks for visiting!
